A few months ago I was having a conversation with a mentor about staying motivated. I was telling him how sometimes I struggle to keep motivated when it feels like all I ever hear from people are the things I do wrong or the way they would have done it. Meaning knock a project out of the park and the only thing I get is “did you consider this, did you think about that” and on and on. And 99% of the time the answer is yes, I did what I did considering all other options because I am a professional. I’m sure a lot of people relate when you get zero positive feedback but are a words of affirmation person.
My mentor told me ‘here’s the deal, you play in the pros now so everyone’s going to be 100x harder on you and more critical of what you do and they will rarely say good job. And you can’t change the people around you so change the way you deal with them and how it makes you feel.’ He suggested celebrating the small wins and the big wins on my own. So he suggested I start doing Friday Prizeday.
Here’s how it works. I make a list on Sunday/Monday of things I want to accomplish during the week. They could be small things to move something 1 step forward or they could be tackling something big. I also include an overall goal for the week like “be 15 minutes earlier for work every day this week” or “work out 4 times”. If I check off my list AND achieve my weekly goal I get myself a prize on Fridays.
Your prize can be anything. One week I finally bought the Apple EarPods I had been wanting for a while. But during the holidays I’d been getting a gingerbread latte from Starbucks because I love them but rarely get coffee out anymore.
If you’re looking for a great and easy way to keep yourself motivated or just on track throughout the week, this has been incredibly helpful for me.
I’d love to know if you try Friday Prizeday and how it works for you! Or if you have other ways to stay motivated to crush your week, share them in the comments!
