My 2014 BIRCHBOX haul was pretty fantastic. I didn’t even know I needed 4,539 new lipsticks until I tried some samples and they all just looked amazing. I had such a good year with my samples, I thought I’d do a year-end roundup of my top ten favorite BIRCHBOX samples of 2014.
No. 1: My favorite sample this year, hands down, was this Klorane Dry Shampoo. I’ve been a devoted user of dry shampoo for many years now. I have somewhat oily hair, so it’s basically a necessity in my life. Klorane does a great job with this dry shampoo because it’s gentle and doesn’t cause dry skin or itching. It’s great if you have sensitive skin or just feel like your dry shampoo is making your scalp weird and itchy. Another huge bonus is that Klorane makes dry shampoo in a few different options; you can get an aerosol can, a non-aerosol can (my personal choice), AND they have a naturally tinted version so it doesn’t leave white spots on your dark hair! I love having options.
No. 2: My second choice in 2014 is this Model Co Party Proof Matte Lipstick in Peony. I wrote about Model Co’s neutral lipstick set earlier which I bought when I got to visit the BIRCHBOX store in Soho. I got this sample and loved the long lasting wear. The color is really bright which is great because I tend to do a neutral makeup look overall with a bright, bold lip. The great part about this lipstick is that it doesn’t dry out your lips either like some lipsticks.
No. 3: Next on my list is this Cuppa Cuppa Tea Treatment Mask, which I wrote about here. I got to pick this as one of my samples because I’m a BIRCHBOX Ace which is code for “just have your paycheck direct deposited to us”. But I was really anxious to try this and absolutely love this. My skin is so soft after this mask and it gives it a good glow which is much needed during winter when my skin is dry and dull.
No. 4: Next on my list is this palette by theBALM cosmetics. The full size version comes with all the colors listed on the inside cover, but I got the PIE shade in my sample. I didn’t really get this sample when it arrived because I’m just not usually into the do it all, lips and cheeks, combo. I tried this and totally loved it. It’s a super soft makeup and didn’t dry out my skin at all. It also held up well considering I have oily skin. It’s also just a really fun case and the other colors look really great too; you get to have lots of different options all in one palette.
No. 5: Coming in at number 5 is this hair treatment mask by Beauty Protector. I will buy literally anything this brand sells; I talked about their amazing detangler here. It smells so amazing and bonus actually does good things for your hair. This mask was awesome and made my hair super soft and shiny. It has this mousse texture which is different than any other mask I’ve tried. Did I mention it smells amazing?
No. 6: Speaking of smelling amazing, I got this English Laundry perfume and I love it. I’m not typically a perfume girl, mainly because I spend the first 10 minutes of wearing it sneezing my head off. I love this perfume so much that I was willing to handle a few minutes of sneezing to smell like this all day. It’s a little pricey for the whole bottle, so I recommend trying their travel size first to see how you like it.
No. 7: I love finding new shampoo and conditioner and this set from Davines is amazing. It smells awesome and left my somewhat coarse hair super soft. I’ve used Davines shampoo before and liked it a lot, but not enough for the cost. I would probably buy this one in full size, I really loved it. I just got it in my December box so I’ve only just gotten to try the sample.
No. 8: If you have ever had the torment of a sunburned nose no matter how much spf you use, then you understand the problem of aftersun care. What do I put on before my makeup? I need some aloe, but I don’t want that gooey stuff on my face all day under my makeup. I got this Coola after-sun lotion and it was the answer to all of my sunburn prayers. It cools your skin and heals it while not leaving your skin really gross from aloe. It’s absolutely amazing and a total must-have if you enjoy being near sunshine, which is everyone, unless you’re a vampire. If you are a vampire, leave a comment below, I’d love to know your makeup tricks because I am also very pale. No. 9: I am pretty monogamous with my moisturizer, but in November I strayed to try this SeaRX Birch Sap Moisturizer. This stuff is absolutely amazing if you have oily skin. It is a non-greasy moisturizer and goes on super soft. I was totally in love with it. It completely changed my allegiance to my old moisturizer and I’ll be using this from now on.
No. 10: This Dr. Jart+ Pore Minish Primer is one of my favorite BIRCHBOX finds of all time. This stuff is amazing for your skin. It is not only a great primer, it actually heals skin and gives a smoother complexion. Talk about serious double duty. This primer is serious business and will totally change your primer game.
No. 11: I couldn’t stop at just 10 and I’m throwing in a bonus sample. I got this W3ll People highlighter in my December box and this stuff is awesome. I didn’t get into highlighter until recently so it’s a work in process for me to find one I really want to commit to. This one is great and goes on really light and is able to withstand my oily skin, which I feel like I’m starting to talk about a lot, I’m sorry, I’ll cool it with the oily skin for your normal skin people out there. Anyway, this highlighter is great too as someone starting out with highlighter and still not totally sure what the hell this does. I just know my skin looks a little brighter and a lot less like a corpse in this dry winter midwest air.
Let me know what were some of your favorite 2014 BIRCHBOX samples!
