French Hot Chocolate

If you haven’t noticed already, I have a bit of a sweet tooth. By a bit of one I mean I live for cupcakes and candy. One of my favorite trips was Belgium because I spent 90% of the time eating chocolate. They are basically giving it away everywhere you go there. I never wanted to leave.

One of the best things I’ve ever had in all my travels is French hot chocolate. It’s just melted chocolate and whipped cream. I mean as if I needed another reason to want to move to France.

The good thing is that it’s super easy to make at home so I can have it whenever I want. Which is amazing and terrible at the same time. It’s just one of those drinks that’s perfect, but I could drink it every day in the Winter. With the holidays so close, I’ve been drinking this way more than I should. But luckily I’ve got those New Year’s resolutions and my new workout gear to fix this in a few weeks.

Here’s everything you need to make your own decadent hot chocolate for the holidays.

1 1/2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

2 teaspoons powdered sugar

1/2 tsp espresso powder – totally optional, it intensifies the chocolate flavor

8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped

Huge bowl of whipped cream  – to be honest you should always have this around the house

In a medium sauce pan over medium heat, whisk together the whole milk, heavy cream, powdered sugar, and espresso powder until small bubbles appear around the edges. Don’t let it boil!

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the chopped chocolate until melted. If you need to, put the sauce pan over low heat to let the chocolate melt completely.

It’s best served in a giant mug with loads of whipped cream on top.

I also highly recommend drinking it on the couch curled up with a good book. I find this to be the best way to enjoy the most decadent hot chocolate ever.
