I’ve been called a lot of things, “low maintenance” has never been one of them.
I have been on a lifelong journey to find the perfect base makeup. I have a few items I have used since I was able to successfully defend my case for makeup to my mom at 13. Other products, like primer, I treat a lot like speed dating. I find one I really like, but then moments later another equal or better one comes along to distract me. Regardless of outfit, hair, or nail color, these are the makeup items I wear practically every single day.
If you’re like me and have oily skin, you know how hard it is to find primer. I got this Dr. Jart+ Pore Medic primer in a BirchBox and loved it so much I bought a full size. Which happens pretty much all the time for me. It works like normal primer, but actually treats skin to give you a clearer complexion. It has a matte finish, but definitely leaves you with softer skin.
To keep with this matte theme, my favorite powder in the world is Clinique’s stay-matte sheer pressed powder in Invisible Matte. Invisible meaning it doesn’t matter if you’re tan for the summer or pale
for the winter all year round. It goes on, well, invisible and gives a matte look which is perfect to get rid of shine.
I love using highlighter. Especially this Chanel Highlighter pen. I let the woman at the Nordstrom counter talk me into it about a year ago while I was playing with lipstick and I’ve been hooked since. It’s great for under eyes, blemishes, and around your mouth to prevent lipstick bleeding. I know sounds weird, trust me it’s a thing.
My absolute favorite eyeshadow and possibly the biggest splurge in my makeup is this Chanel Les 4 Ombres. I use it for everyday and because there are darker and lighter shades of brown, I can do a smokey eye or mix up the color combos. Having blue eyes and also being generally kind of lazy, I wear brown eye shadow pretty much always. So this gets it’s money’s worth.
I used to exclusively only wear Chanel mascara, until I got this bad boy in a BirchBox. Total game changer. Benefit’s They’re Real mascara basically makes it look like you have on fake lashes. The best part? Not having to stab your eyeball or live in fear of gluing your eye shut with fake lashes. I had lash extensions for a while which I loved, but the price and maintenance I did not love. This mascara is a great alternative.
Eyebrow pencil is something I only very recently got into and now I can’t live without it. Your brows set the whole tone of your face. I just feel a lot more pulled together with this Benefit Instant Brow Pencil. It’s kind of foolproof, which obviously I need because, again, super lazy. I was really intimidated by the idea of eyebrow pencils but this is super easy to put in and it’s basically just a color inside the lines deal. It takes about 10 seconds for both eyes and your brows will thank you.
Finishing powder is something I didn’t fully appreciate until pretty recently. I just brush a little all over really quickly to set my makeup for the day. It reduces shine so you won’t have to touch up or add any extra powder throughout the day. Like I said, I have oily skin so this has been a real revelation. I found this NYX HD Studio Finishing Powder and it’s pretty much exactly the same as Make Up For Ever only about $10 at the drugstore. Definitely worth giving it a whirl if you aren’t totally sold.
