Apple Cider & Ginger Whiskey Cocktail

Lately I’ve been branching out from my standard glass of red wine to trying different cocktails. Over the past few months I’ve grown to love whiskey. I really had never tried whiskey before but when my friend invited me to Women Who Whiskey with her I said yes because I’m trying very hard to say yes to more new things. As it turns out, I’m a big fan of whiskey. I definitely think my tastes have changed over the past year after cutting out so much added sugar from my diet. I find myself ordering less sweet drinks and craving dessert a lot less.

The thing I like most about whiskey is that it makes a great Winter drink to warm you up. Based on my limited research constrained to the women I know, it seems like a lot of women don’t even bother with whiskey because it makes such a strong drink. Well don’t worry, I’m here to ruin the idea that only men like to drink whiskey. The key to it is to find the right mixers. I know I do love slightly sweet drinks if I’m going for a cocktail so I always pick something that is fruit based. Or my favorite way to sweeten up my drink naturally is with honey. Like I said I’ve been trying to cut out lots of added sugar so I’m always looking for ways to sweeten things up because let’s be honest this sweet tooth will never totally leave me.

After a little too good of a time at Women Who Whiskey a few months ago I went home with some ginger whiskey from Rebel Yell Whiskey, a St. Louis brand! At Women Who Whiskey you get to try each whiskey straight up with no mixers or anything. Since I’m not mentally prepared for a sobbing, drunken breakdown outside a nice restaurant in my late 20s, I always ask for the best thing Gamlin offers, honey ice cubes to water it down and sweeten it a little. I’ve been trying to find different ways to drink my ginger whiskey at home and knew I had to make my own honey ice cubes which are really simple. I also happened to have some apple cider, which is the perfect flavor with whiskey. I love apples and apple cider season is my favorite, so I always have some in my fridge this time of year.

It’s such a simple cocktail and one you can easily throw together in a pinch. I would definitely make this as a big batch drink as well for a party or guests. I’m really not a fancy cocktail person at home, so for me it’s all about using what I’ve got to make something delicious. For the honey ice cubes, I do recommend using a Tovolo ice cube tray so your ice is slow melting.

1 part Ginger Whiskey

2 parts Apple Cider

1-2 Honey Ice Cubes

To make your honey ice cubes, simply measure 1 cup of warm water and add 2-3 tablespoons honey. Stir until the honey dissolves and pour into your ice cube tray. This is a simple way to add flavor to any cocktail or mocktail.
